Cross country glory for Scoil Asicus Strandhill!
23rd Sep 2024
The Sligo School's Cross Country Championship was held at Rathcormac on Saturday 21st September and once again it was the children of Scoil Asicus Naofa who dominated the medal board.
For a change there was a nice dry day and good conditions underfoot for the junior (3rd & 4th class) and senior (5th & 6th class) athletes.
In the Junior Girls race, Indie came home in 2nd place and the girls team of Indie, Fiadh, Annabelle, Kate, Amy and Saoirse won Gold overall.
Next up was the Junior Boys contest where Leo led the field home in 1st place with a very strong run. Coming up behind him were the rest of the Strandhill boys to claim gold for a promising-looking team of Leo, Andrew, Daniel, Seán, Flynn, Fionn and Séigh.
Our Senior Girls team had a tough race on their hands but were not going to leave with a medal. Their teamwork and consistency of running brought the team home in 3rd place overall. Bronze medals for Lana-Maye, Ella, Moya, Eden, Niamh and Lara.
The final event was the Senior Boys and once again it was runners from Scoil Asicus picking up the gold medals. Led home by Moss who placed 2nd, was the team of Ayden, Jay, Rían, Timmy and Felix. A third gold place result for the Strandhill athletes.
Saturday's success was built upon the regular lunchtime training and expert coaching from our Deputy Principal Noreen Joyce who put a lot of time into encouraging the children. We wish all our runners good luck in the Connacht Cross Country Competition on Sat 12th October in Mohill, Co Leitrim.
